Hendrick, Mark

Sir Mark Hendrick was first elected as the Labour Party MP for Preston in a 2000 by-election being re-elected in 2019 with a majority of 12,146.

The constituency of Preston is a compact constituency in central Lancashire based entirely on the city of Preston itself.    This seat excludes the north of Preston which is in the neighbouring Wyre and Preston North Seat.  An ethnically diverse constituency, Asian voters account for a fifth of the electorate here. Preston is safe Labour territory which has been held by the party continuously ever since the Second World War.  This seat does though have one of the smallest electorates in England, and is likely to be expanded by the Boundary Commission in the future.

Hendrick was the Labour Member of the European Parliament for Central Lancashire between 1994 and 1999.  He was knighted in 2018.

Born in 1958, Sir Mark Mark studied electrical and electronic engineering at Liverpool Polytechnic obtaining a BSc (Hons). He later completed an MSc degree in Computer Science at Manchester University. He is Chartered Engineer.  He also previously worked as a Lecturer in Digital Electronics and Software Design at Stockport College.

Hendrick was a councillor on Salford Council between 1987 and 1995.

Hendrick is considered to be right of the Labour Party.  Accordingly, he backed David Miliband in the 2010 Labour leadership election, Liz Kendall in 2015, and supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge to Jeremy Corbyn.   He backed Lisa Nandy in the 2020 contest.

Sir Mark Hendrick is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Norway. He is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Gambling Related Harm; China; Croatia; Singapore; Vietnam; Artificial Intelligence; Cider; and Community Development in Europe.
