Penny Mordaunt dismisses rumours she will be ‘installed’ in No 10 after local elections

Speaking in the House of Commons on Thursday morning after delivering the weekly business statement, leader of the House Penny Mordaunt rejected rumours she replace Rishi Sunak as prime minister after the local elections.

Reflecting on recent reports based on briefings by some of the PM’s critics, Mordaunt said: “I too have read that I am to be installed, rather like a new boiler, into No 10 next week.

“And I have to say, Mr. Speaker, there is as much truth to these stories as there is in Labour’s assurances to its business community that it isn’t actually going to do the things it’s been saying it’s going to do and has promised its union paymasters”.

She added: “I support our prime minister and I will continue to support him after this weekend and beyond because his plan is working”.
