Jones, Ruth

Ruth Jones is‌ ‌the Labour ‌Party MP‌ ‌for Newport‌ West,‌ ‌having‌ ‌first‌ ‌been‌ ‌elected‌ ‌to‌ ‌Parliament‌ ‌in‌ a by-election in April 2019.  She was reelected in 2019 with a majority of just 902.

The Newport West constituency ‌in the ‌county‌ ‌of‌ ‌Glamorgan covers‌ the western and northern boundaries of the city of Newport‌, running up the coast towards Cardiff.  It contains Newport Docks and the University of South Wales.

Ruth Jones ‌was‌ ‌appointed‌ ‌as‌ the Shadow Minister for Natural Environment and air quality in‌ August 2020.

Born‌ ‌in 1962, Ruth Jones grew up in Newport and was educated at the University of Cardiff. She‌ ‌worked‌ ‌as‌ a physiotherapist in the National Health Service for over 30 years, including at Nevill Hall Hospital, Panteg Stroke Unit and Serennu Children’s Centre in Newport.

Jones is also a trade unionist.   Working for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Ruth Jones previously served as President of the Wales Trades Union Congress.

At Westminster, Jones is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Wales in the World, Cerebral Palsy, Microplastics, and Vascular and Venous Disease.

Jones is married with grown up children, and lists her interests as singing in a local choir.
