Electoral official says England is ‘stepping into the unknown’ with voter ID rollout at local elections

The commons levelling up, housing and communities select committee today heard evidence from electoral officials across the devolved regions. The committee is undertaking an investigation into voter registration, examining the advantages and disadvantages of the existing system and what steps the UK could take to boost registration levels.

Questioned about the impact of the rollout of voter ID at the upcoming local elections, Peter Stanyon, the Chief Executive of Association of Electoral Administrators, said: “So it’s going to be stepping into the unknown. … There is very limited good practice. … The proof will be in the pudding on the 4th of May”.
