The Conservatives have overtaken Labour as the party most trusted to deal with economy in the latest in a series of blows to the government.

It is the first time since ComRes started asking the question in September that the Tories have led Labour on the economy.

The poll, conducted for the Independent, gave the Conservatives a 16-point lead over Labour, at 44 per cent to 28 per cent. The Liberal Democrats stood on 17 percent.

The Conservatives also lead in every demographic bar one, the lowest social class grade representing about 32 percent of the population.

Were these results to be transferred to a general election they would see the Conservatives win with a substantial majority of 128.

Another piece of good news for the Tories is that their base appears most likely to vote, and most likely to vote for them in the next election.

Of those who identified themselves as Conservative, 95 per cent said they would vote Conservative in the next election against 82 and 81 percent for the Lib Dems and Labour respectively.

And of the supporters of each party, 71 percent of Tories said they would definitely vote while 62 percent of Lib Dems and only 57 percent of Labour supporters said they would.
