Political world pays tribute to fallen police

By

Political figures have paid tribute to two policewomen who were shot and killed during a routine call in Manchester today.

Witnesses heard several gunshots and an explosion in Hattersley, Tameside, before news spread of what happened.

"The killing of two police officers in Manchester is a shocking reminder of the debt we owe to those who put themselves in danger to keep us safe and secure," David Cameron said.

"I want to offer my thoughts, along with those of the whole country, to the families, friends and colleagues at this difficult time."

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said the killings were "tragic and distressing".

Home secretary Theresa May said it was "a deeply shocking incident".

The officers were named as Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes.

A man was arrested in connection to the offences after he walked into a Hyde police station shortly after the incident.
