Labour MP: PM taking ‘strategic inspiration’ from Nadine Dorries over election timing

At Prime Minister’s Questions today, Labour MP Alistair Strathern joked that Rishi Sunak is taking “strategic inspiration” from former MP Nadine Dorries over election timing.

The prime minister declared last week that it is his “working assumption” that an election will be in the second half of this year.

Nadine Dorries, Strathern’s predecessor as the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, waited weeks before making good on her pledge to resign as an MP, triggering a by-election.

Speaking the commons today, Strathern said: “My constituents had to wait months for an election to finally be confirmed, with uncertainty repeatedly prolonged, seemingly out of self-interest.

“Now out of all people, I didn’t expect the prime minister to be turning to my predecessor for strategic inspiration”.
