Government to ‘upgrade’ agreement with Rwanda to treaty ‘as soon as possible’

In a ministerial statement to the House of Commons today, new home secretary James Cleverly told MPs that the government intends to “upgrade” its agreement with Rwanda to a Treaty.

Cleverly said: “The Supreme Court has today upheld the judgement of the Court of Appeal, meaning that we cannot yet lawfully remove people to Rwanda. The important thing to note is that the judgement of the Court today was made on the basis of facts from 15 months ago”.

He added later: “Our intention is to upgrade our agreement to a treaty as soon as possible”.
