Boris Johnson calls for funding for his constituency to fulfil 2019 manifesto commitment on ‘new’ hospitals

During Health and Social Care Department questions today, former prime minister Boris Johnson asked the minister for an update on the progress of the hospital building programme in his constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

The hospital building programme was initiated during Mr Johnson’s tenure as prime minister.

The intervention comes after it was revealed that one in five of the “40 new hospitals” promised in the 2019 manifesto will not be built in time for 2030 deadline.

Mr Johnson said: “Can I thank my right honourable friend for the rapid progress he’s making on the hospital building programme and I can can I ask him to confirm that he will shortly be announcing a full and final programme of funding so that we can deliver a superb new state of the art hospital in Hillingdon?”.

The health secretary Steve Barclay responded: “I’m delighted to hear that the enabling works are underway. I know my honourable friend has championed both Hillingdon and the wider New Hospitals Building Programme”.
