Most voters support the new coalition government although it is threatening Lib Dem popularity, a new poll has found.

The ICM poll for the Guardian found that 59% of voters approved of the decision to form a coalition while 32% opposed it.

Tories were the most likely to back it, with 81% in favour. Lib Dems were 69% in favour. Labour voters were 51% against and 40% in favour.

But there is cause to worry for the Lib Dem leadership, with support for the party dropping three points to 21%. A fifth of those who support the party say they are now less likely to vote Lib Dem.

On the bright side for Lib Dem officials, there appears to be substantial public support for reform of the voting system, with 56% of voters in favour of a more proportional system.
