Labour bans four MPs from standing

Labour’s internal ‘star chamber’ has banned four of its MPs from standing at the next election after assessing their expenses claims.

David Chaytor, Elliot Morley, Margaret Moran and Ian Gibson were all told by the party’s disciplinary panel they would not be allowed to stand as Labour candidates.

“After considering in detail the cases of David Chaytor, Ian Gibson, Margaret Moran and Elliot Morley and speaking to those who wished to be interviewed, the Labour party’s special national executive committee endorsements panel today unanimously recommended rescinding each of their endorsement as Labour candidates,” a spokesman said.

“As both Gordon Brown and the national executive committee have made clear, the Labour party demands the very highest standard of its MPs.”

Of the four MPs, only Gibson still planned to stand at the next election.
A fifth Labour MP, Jim Devine, is still being investigated.
