Clarke: I’m ashamed to be Labour

Former home secretary Charles Clarke has joined the chorus of Labour elders coming out against the prime minister, telling journalists he is “ashamed to be a Labour MP”.

He had “worked half my life to get Labour into a position where it could be a good government and I do see that fading away,” he added.

Mr Clarke’s contribution means Gordon Brown is now facing attacks from two former home secretaries, with David Blunkett expressing criticism of the government this morning.

Mr Clarke is well known for his outbursts against the current leadership, and engaged in similar attacks during leadership speculation last summer.
