David Cameron has promised to make public any secret files on UFOs if he becomes prime minister.

Responding to a question about cover-ups of flying alien crafts, the Conservative leader pledged he would be “open and frank” about government knowledge of extraterrestrials.

“I’m convinced we’ve been visited by aliens – one of them is trade secretary Peter Mandelson,” Mr Cameron joked to the Cameron Direct meeting in Tynemouth, North Tyneside.

A member of the audience quizzed him about a series of mysterious incidents and alleged X-files style conspiracies in the US, and asked: “Do you agree with me that the British people have a right to know if we have been visited, and if so, when you become prime minister will you seek to lift the veil of secrecy and give the public the truth that they deserve?”

Mr Cameron confessed his ignorance on the subject, saying, “I have no idea if there is intelligent life out there and no idea whether any of the sightings which have taken place or whether any incidents which have taken place have any basis in truth.”

But he assured the audience that intelligent life “is certainly not something that any government should seek to hide from anyone”.
