Tube workers could strike over safety concerns
Tube workers in the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) union could be balloted about strike action tomorrow because of safety fears in the wake of the London terror attacks.
The country’s largest transport union says that it will ballot its 11,000 members if talks with London Underground break down.
A security conference has been scheduled for tomorrow with London Underground’s managing director, Tim O’ Toole, and senior police officials.
RMT general secretary Bob Crow said tomorrow’s meeting was an opportunity for London Underground to demonstrate it has put in place “additional measures” to improve the security of RMT members and passengers.
Mr Crow is concerned that London Underground will continue with plans to reduce station staff numbers, describing those plans as “bizarre”.
Other demands include a requirement for more emergency equipment to be provided for staff on the Tube.
