Indonesia gets to grips with bird flu

Ten million chickens infected with avian influenza will be slaughtered in Indonesia, as the country faces up to the deadly virus.

But social welfare minister Jusuf Kalla forecast yesterday that the bird flu would be under control by year-end.

Mr Kalla said the cull had already begun in the tourist resort of Bali.

To date the deadly virus has claimed the lives of ten people in Vietnam and five in Thailand

About 4.7 million chickens were reported to have died in Indonesia by January, either from Newcastle disease – non-fatal for humans – or a combination of Newcastle and bird flu.
