Libya to abandon WMD plans
Libya’s Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has pledged to dismantle clandestine plans to acquire weapons of mass destruction, it was announced last night.
Colonel Gaddafi told the official Libyan news agency he was ready to play a role in freeing the world of terrorism.
Dismantling the weapons would be “transparent and verifiable,” he said.
Top level discussions have taken place between the UK, the US and Libya over the last nine months, after Tripoli admitted it had WMD programmes and wanted help in giving them up.
Hitherto Libya has always insisted it only had facilities for drugs or agricultural research.
As well as having a substantial armoury of chemical and biological weapons, Libya was close to developing nuclear weapons capability, senior sources revealed.
As well as eliminating ballistic missiles beyond 200 miles range and abiding with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and the additional protocol, Libya has said it will jettison all chemical weapons stocks and munitions, and honour the chemical weapons convention.
Immediate inspections and monitoring will take place to verify all of these actions.
