Police are investigating Loyalist links with a suspected Semtex car bomb in Bolton.

The “viable” device was found underneath a car in the northern town at 07:15GMT yesterday.

Twenty-five residents were evacuated until mid-afternoon.

Greater Manchester Police said the target of the bomb was likely to have been John “Fat Jackie” Thompson, an alleged colleague of former Ulster Defence Association terrorist Johnny “Mad Dog” Adair.

Mr Adair’s wife and children left Ireland in February to escape Loyalist infighting in Belfast.

Meanwhile, Gina Adair and son Jonathan appeared in court charged with conspiring to supply several Class A drugs.

The two were remanded in custody to appear at Bolton Crown Court on December 23th.
