Priti Patel allegedly plans to delay or ban visas from countries refusing to ‘return’ illegal migrants

The home secretary will reportedly table amendments to the Nationality and Borders Bill that would allow the block or delay of visas for people from countries refusing to take back migrants that have travelled to the UK illegally, The Telegraph has reported today.

Priti Patel MP says the plans would pressure countries to take back people who have failed to gain asylum or who have criminal records.

A £190 surcharge could be handed to visa applicants and visas for nationals from non-compliant countries could even be suspended entirely.

Over 10,000 criminals in the UK are currently eligible for deportation and around 42,000 failed asylum applicants still reside in the UK.

According to the newspaper, Ms Patel said of the plans: “The UK has a proud history of being open to the world but we rightly expect our international partners to work with us to remove those who have no right to be in the UK, such as dangerous foreign national offenders.

“It is unfair on UK citizens and taxpayers that pressure is put on our public services by foreign nationals with no legal right to be here.

“Through my New Plan for Immigration, and this landmark legislation, I will continue to take the difficult action needed to fix our broken asylum system and deliver on what the British people want – full control of our borders.”

The Bill will return to the House of Commons next week.
