Plans for Sir David Amess statue gaining support

Plans to erect a statue of the late MP Sir David Amess in his constituency of Southend are growing in support.

The Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell, himself from the area, suggested the idea in the House of Lords earlier this week.

He said the statue ought to be positioned it at the end of the town’s long pier.

The Conservative MP for Southend West in Essex David tragically died on Friday afternoon after he was stabbed multiple times during a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea.

Speaking in the House of Commons in Monday, as MPs paid tribute to the Sir David, Boris Johnson said Southend would be “accorded the city status it so clearly deserves.”

Sir David was well known for taking any opportunity he could to champion the granting of city status to Southend.
