Andy McDonald quits Shadow Cabinet in row over minimum wage

Andy McDonald has resigned from the shadow cabinet in explosive fashion, tearing into Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour leadership.

In his resignation later, the shadow secretary of state for employment rights said his position had become “untenable” following an order to argue against a £15 national minimum wage.

McDonald said: “After eighteen months of your leadership, our movement is more divided than ever and the pledges that you made to the membership are not being honoured. This is just the latest of many.”

The news follows reports that McDonald will host an event with Keir Starmer’s predecessor Jeremy Corbyn tomorrow, in support of a Unite campaign to ban the practice of firing and rehiring.

McDonald is an ally of Corbyn, who previously served under him as the shadow transport secretary.
