Alyn Smith is the Scottish National party MP for Stirling, having first been elected to Parliament in the 2019 general election with a majority of 9,254 over the Conservative Party.
The rural constituency of Sterling in central Scotland spreads largely northwards from the city of Sterling. It contains the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, the Trossachs National Park, and the smaller towns of Dunblane and Doune. The seat has a notable student population at the University of Sterling. The battle of Bannockburn in which the army of the Scots King, Robert the Bruce, defeated King Edward II of England, was fought in this constituency in 1314.
Stirling was previously held by the Conservative Cabinet Minister Michael Forsyth between 1983 and 1997, before being gained by Labour between 1997 and 2015. Since 2015 the seat has swapped backwards and forwards between the SNP and the Conservatives.
Alyn Smith was appointed as the SNP Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth affairs in January 2020 .
Alyn Smith previously represented Scotland in the European Parliament as an MEP between 2004 and 2019. Smyth has been a member of the SNP’s National Executive Committee continuously since 2005. He serves as the Party’s Policy Development Convener.
Born in 1973 in Glasgow, Alyn Smith grew up in Scotland and Saudi Arabia. He went to Nottingham Trent university and studied law. He worked as a commercial lawyer for Clifford Chance before moving into politics.
Alyn Smith is Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary University Group. A campaigner for animal welfare, he is Vice President of the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,
