Rees, Christina

Christina Rees was elected as the Labour MP for Neath, having first been elected to Parliament in 2015. She was re-elected in the 2019 with a majority of 5,637.

In October 2022, Rees lost the Labour whip at Westminster as the party investigated a complaint against her.  The complaint was reported by the Guardian as relating to bullying allegations involving her staff.

The constituency of Neath in West Glamorgan spreads northwards from the town of Neath, up through Pontardawe in the Swansea Valley, towards the Brecon beacons.  Neath is a former mining area which has since been at the centre of a number of regeneration initiatives.  Having been represented by Labour at Westminster for a century, Neath was previously represented in parliament by the Labour Cabinet Minister, Peter Hain.

Born in 1954, Christina Rees was educated at the University of Wales.  She worked as a barrister, before being elected to Parliament.

Rees served in the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Wales from 2017-2020.

She supported Andy Burnham in the 2015 Labour leadership election, Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge against Jeremy Corbyn, and backed Sir Keir Starmer in the 2020 leadership contest.

A former Justice of the Peace, Rees was a councillor on Bridgend Council between 2012 and 2015.

In her young days, Christina Rees played Squash for Wales.  Rees is also reported to have a black belt in judo.

She was previously married to the former Secretary of State for Wales, Ron Davies, and has one daughter.
