McMorrin, Anna

Anna McMorrin was first elected as the Labour MP for Cardiff North in 2017, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 6,982.

She serves as Shadow Minister for Overseas Territories and the Commonwealth, having been appointed to the role in Keir Starmer’s September 2023 reshuffle.

The constituency of Cardiff North was previously a swing marginal constituency that tended to change with the government of the day, but it has become a safer Labour seat in recent years.  Arguably the most middle class and affluent of Cardiff’s constituencies with a large proportion of owner occupiers.  It includes the Heath, Lisvane, Llandaff, Llanishen, Old St Mellons, and Whitchurch areas of the Welsh capital. It also contains a large number of student voters.

Anna McMorrin previously served as Shadow Minister for Victims and Youth Justice.  She also served as a Shadow Minister for International development between 2020 and 2021.

McMorrin nominated Sir Keir Starmer in the 2020 Labour leadership election.

Born in 1971, McMorrin graduated from the University of Southampton, and then from Cardiff University with a post-graduate diploma in journalism. She worked in public relations and communications, before being elected to Parliament.

Before being elected to Westminster, McMorrin was a Special Adviser on Climate Change and Environment to the Welsh Labour Government for over six years.  She was also a former Campaigns Officer for Friends of the Earth.

In 2022, McMorrin told GB News that she previously had to imagine she was Beyonce to summon the strength to finally an abusive relationship, which she said had left her questioning what was true and what was fake.

Anna McMorrin is Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on International Conservation, Net Zero, Internet, Communications and Technology, the Packaging Manufacturing Industry, the UK Shared Prosperity fund, the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development, Antisemitism, the Western Gateway, and Climate Change.

McMorrin has 2 daughters and speaks French and Spanish.
