Jessica Morden was first elected as the Labour MP for Newport East in 2005, being reelected with a majority of 1,992 in 2019.
She serves as Keir Starmer’s Private Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), and as a shadow minister for Wales.
The Newport East constituency covers the east of the town of Newport in South Wales, spreading out along the Severn to the Welsh border with England. The steelworks at Llanwern is a large employer in this constituency.
Although Labour’s majority has been small here in the Conservative landslide years such as 1983 and 2019, this area has supported Labour ever since the Second World War.
Before Starmer’s September 2023 reshuffle, Morden served in the Labour whips office and as Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons.
Morden previously served as Chair of the Select Committee on Statutory Instruments in 2018.
Morden supported Owen Smith in his 2016 challenge against Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn.
Born in 1968. Morden was brought up in nearby Cwmbran. She was educated at Croesyceilliog School before reading History at Birmingham University.
Before becoming a Member of Parliament Jessica worked for two local MP’s (Llew Smith in Blaenau Gwent and Huw Edwards in Monmouth) and following that for the Wales Labour Party where she was General Secretary.
