The Aberdeen South constituency‌ ‌covers‌ the southern suburbs of the City of Aberdeen and some rural areas to the south.   Supported by the oil industry, Aberdeen South is one of the most affluent seats in Scotland, and more so than the neighbouring Aberdeen North constituency.  The Conservative Party held the seat between 2017 and 2019, and during the period of the Thatcher and Major governments in the 1980s and 1990s.

A professional politician, Flynn previously worked as a political researcher for SNP MSPs at Holyrood and SNP MPs at Westminster,  before ‌being‌ ‌elected‌ ‌to‌ Parliament.‌ ‌
