Alexandra Davies-Jones is the Welsh Labour MP for Pontypridd, having first been elected to Parliament in the 2019 general election with a majority of 5,890 over the Conservatives.
The constituency of Pontypridd covers the Taf and Ely valleys in South Wales, some twelve miles to the north of Cardiff. Pontypridd itself is the county town of Rhondda Cynon Taf. The University of South Wales is found in this constituency. It has been a safe Labour constituency every since the Second World War. Prior to 2019 it was represented by Owen Jones, who had previously and unsuccessfully challenged Jeremy Corbyn for the Labour leadership back in 2016.
Alex Davies-Jones currently serves as a shadow spokesperson on Culture, Media, and Sport.
Born in 1989, Davies-Jones was educated at Cardiff university. She previously worked a researcher in the Welsh Assembly, and as a researcher at Westminster for the previous MP for Pontypridd, Owen Smith.
Davies-Jones then worked as a Communications Manager for Welsh Water, before being elected to Parliament. She is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Water Group.
After becoming an MP she remained as a councillor on Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, where she was first elected in 2017.
Davies-Jones is said to enjoy playing darts and singing – she is the Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Music Education.
She is also a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Coalfield Communities, Farming, Media, Infant Feeding, Ovarian Cancer, State Pension Inequality, Social Enterprise, and Premature and Sick Babies. She is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Domestic Abuse.
