New bill would bar those who ‘turned a blind eye to child abuse’ from holding public office

The Conservative MP Alexander Stafford today proposed a 10 minute rule bill which, if passed, would bar those who have failed in a duty of care to prevent child abuse from holding any elected office or any post paid for by public money.

The bill would also prevent anyone convicted of child abuse from holding elected office and to strip any peer convicted of such an offence of their peerage.

Mr Stafford said: “[This bill will] ensure those that committed or enabled or turned a blind eye to such monstrous acts never hold authority in or over victims communities or society ever again”.
