MPs debate the case of Jagtar Singh Johal

MPs have debated the case of Jagtar Singh Johal, a British citizen of the Sikh faith who was first arrested in November 2017 in India. The stated reasons for Mr Johal’s arrest have been questioned frequently in Parliament. Mr Johal has yet to face trial.

Speaking in the debate SNP MP Martin Docherty-Hughes, of whom Mr Johal is a constituent, said: “The Government of the Republic of India, its judiciary and its police forces are the ones who continue to hold my constituent in a fashion that is consistent with the arbitrary detention. And I would like them to watch this debate today and recognise that this has not escaped international attention”.
