Duncan Smith among Conservatives disagreeing with government migration stance

In a debate on the nationality and borders bill, the government minister Tom Pursglove called for the House of Commons to disagree with the House of Lords’ amendments, describing the government’s alternative stance as “effectively supporting those in need, while protecting borders”.

This was a stance labelled “mean-spirited” by Labour’s Stephen Kinnock. More notably, Iain Duncan Smith disagreed with the stance, “begging” on the government to “support victims of modern day slavery”.

Fellow backbencher Andrew Mitchell offered the government four solutions to provide a better scheme, including putting right “the dreadful relationship with France”.
