Menezes inquest adjourned

The inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes has been adjourned for six months.

Having opened this morning, it will resume on February 23rd 2006 when the investigation into the police shooting of the 27-year-old Brazilian will have been completed.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will produce a report on the death this year, once all legal and disciplinary proceedings in the case are complete, the hearing at Southwark crown court was told today.

Speaking afterwards, lawyers for the De Menezes family reiterated their desire for someone to be held responsible for the death, which occurred on July 22nd – the day after four bombs failed to explode in London.

“We want the IPCC to forge ahead with the investigation so that the family can get justice,” one of the lawyers said.

“It is very important that the family do get justice so that those responsible are held accountable.”
