Cheadle goes to the polls

Voters in Cheadle are heading to the polls today for a by-election triggered by the death of the incumbent Liberal Democrat MP.

Patsy Calton, who took the seat from the Conservatives in 2001, died from cancer within weeks of the May general election.

Mark Hunter is standing for the Lib Dems in today’s vote, while Stephen Day, who was Tory MP there from 1987 until 2001, is standing again. Mark Miller is standing for Labour.

Leslie Leggett, for Veritas, and John Allman, for Alliance for Change – Suffering Little Children, are also standing.

The by-election has been the focus of much attention with Conservative leader Michael Howard and Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy both visiting the affluent Cheshire constituency in the past few weeks.
