Britain is to send a small cohort of military experts to assist the African Union peace keeping efforts in Darfur.

Fifteen members of the RAF’s mobile air movements team will deploy to Kenya to help co-ordinate and deploy the airlift of additional AU troops.

In addition, a number of logistics experts will join the EU’s assistance programme to help maintain the support infrastructure. They are expected to serve in the AU’s forward headquarters in Sudan.

The UK is backing moves to expand the AU mission in Darfur.

Defence Secretary John Reid said: “I am greatly heartened to see NATO and the EU working closely together to provide real, practical assistance to the African Union’s mission to end the suffering in Darfur.

“The UK has an important role to play in this, and I am very pleased to be able to offer this assistance.”
