Welsh language should be for Wales

Welsh language should be for Wales

Any new legislation on the Welsh language should be made in Wales, not Westminster, according to Plaid Cymru AM Elin Jones.

She is calling for all interested organisations to lobby both Westminster and the Assembly to use the upcoming White Paper and Devolution Bill to make Welsh a fully-devolved area.

Ms Jones said: “We now need to drop the call for a new Welsh Language Act from Westminster and take the opportunity presented by the White Paper to devolve all powers on the Welsh Language to the Assembly.”

She added: “Now is the opportunity to finally rest with the people of Wales the right to create laws that relate to its own language. It never made sense for Scottish and English MPs to be voting on legislation affecting the Welsh language.”
