Elections to youth parliament a ‘huge success’
There is less than a month to go until a new batch of MPs is elected, but elections for MYPs have already been concluded.
MYPs are members of the UK Youth Parliament who have been elected by young people aged between 11 and 18. Over 300 MYPs have been elected in the last two months to represent the views and interests of young people in their constituency nationally.
Young people in every Local Education Authority in the country elect an MYP, with runners up becoming deputy MYPs to assist the winners in their work.
In Kent over 26,000 young people voted, electing seven MYPs, while in Essex 27,000 young people voted electing six MYPs.
Ashley Sweetland, co-chair of the board of trustees of the UKYP said: “This is a very exciting time for the UKYP. Support is growing every year. This year, Oxfordshire held their first UKYP election, which was a huge success.”
