Lib Dems: Cycling in crisis under Labour

The number of people cycling on Britain’s roads has suffered a massive decline under Labour, according to the Liberal Democrats.

They claim that since 1997 the number of journeys made by bicycle has fallen by 22 per cent and cyclists are also travelling shorter distances. The Lib Dems promise to create a better cycle environment, integrate public transport with cycling and promote the health benefits of cycling if elected.

Transport spokesman John Thurso said: “Cycling is a healthy, environmentally friendly, inexpensive mode of transport. More needs to be done to provide better facilities and support for existing cyclists, and provide the conditions to encourage many others to get back on their bikes.”

He added: “Labour have broken promise after promise they made to cyclists, and done little to improve conditions for those who actually do choose to cycle.”
