Police given more time to question terror suspects

Police have been given until late Saturday afternoon to question the eight men arrested on Tuesday under the Terrorism Act.

Meanwhile a man in Canada has been charged with helping terrorist activity in London.

The eight, aged between 17 and 32, were arrested on Tuesday morning as part of dawn raids on 24 locations.

Along with the arrests, the 700 police officers conducting the sting also recovered more than half a tonne of potentially explosive material.

The British suspects have been held since Tuesday morning, and last night the police were given more time to conduct inquiries before charges are pressed.

Under the Terrorism Act, their period of detention can be extended to a two-week maximum, after that they must then be charged or released.

Meanwhile in Ottawa a court remanded software developer Mohammad Momin Khawaja, 29, in custody until Friday.

Canadian police announced that the accusations against Mr Khawaja relate to activities between November 10th, 2003 and March 29th, 2004 in Ottawa and in London. They say he “knowingly facilitate(d) a terrorist activity” in both cities.
