Man charged with policeman’s murder

Police have a charged a man with the murder of policeman Ian Broadhurst and the attempted murder of two other officers.

The man is believed to be 37-year-old American, Nathan Coleman, who had been questioned by West Yorkshire Police in Leeds.

Coleman is also wanted in the US on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to murder.

Police said fingerprints taken from Coleman were consistent with those of David Bieber, a man wanted for a murder in Florida in 1995

Pc Ian Broadhurst, a 34-year-old married man, was gunned down on Boxing Day in Leeds after he and a colleague stopped a stolen BMW.

Work colleague and 45-year-old father-of-two Neil Roper, from Wakefield, was shot twice in the incident.

A third policeman was also fired at by the gunman. PC James Banks, 26, a local patrol officer, saw a bullet go through his radio and ricocheted onto the buckle on his baton. He was unhurt.

Coleman was arrested at 0200GMT Wednesday by armed police at a bed and breakfast in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, after a tip off.
