Edinburgh’s Hogmanay cancelled

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay street party has been cancelled after gale force winds gripped the capital.

An estimated 100,000 revellers were expected to congregate in Edinburgh city centre to cap off the four-day Hogmanay celebrations.

But the gig in Princes Street Gardens was stopped just one and a half hours from midnight after organisers said the stage was “disintegrating.”

A total of 8,000 tickets were sold for the Royal Bank Street Party, which was to be headlined by Erasure.

The rest of the New Year event was later cancelled.

Heavy rain and strong winds had hit the capital for much of yesterday.

Celebrations in Aberdeen were also cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, as were events in Liverpool, Newcastle and Gateshead.

Pete Irvine, director of Unique Events, said the decision to cancel was “very, very tough.”

“I’m absolutely, massively disappointed, because my whole team have been doing so much on this for months.

“We cancelled each thing in progression and we didn’t even cancel the fireworks until the very last minute. We all wanted this to go on and we had to balance our consideration for those many people from across the world who had travelled to Edinburgh with our equally important responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone at the event.”
