Three US soldiers die in separate ambushes

Three US soldiers have been killed in Iraq within the space of several hours, all in separate attacks.

A soldier from the 4th Infantry Division was killed when a rocket-propelled grenade landed on the convoy he was travelling in near the Iraqi town of Samarra, south of Tikrit.

In an earlier ambush a soldier from the 1st Armored Division was killed and one was wounded in a gun attack while patrolling the Mansur district of Baghdad.

The third attack occurred in Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit, when a female US soldier was killed and three soldiers were wounded when a roadside bomb explosion struck their convoy.

At least 84 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since President George W Bush declared the end of major combat on May 1st.

Baghdad witnessed violent scenes yesterday after a demonstration by unemployed men turned into a riot. Police fired in the air, as around 100 protesters gathered outside a police station, threw rocks and set cars alight.

The men claimed they had been promised jobs after making payments to police officers. Several people were reportedly injured in the riot.
