Milburn dismisses talk of Cabinet return

Former health secretary Alan Milburn yesterday dismissed claims that he was set for a return to the Cabinet.

Blairite Mr Milburn said he was out of the running for a return for the next three years, adding he now enjoyed “more time, better perspective and a far better balance between home and work”.

The father of two resigned earlier this year to spend more time with his family.

In an online debate for the Guardian, Mr Milburn rejected claims that he wanted the job as first secretary of the proposed North Eastern regional assembly.

The staunch ally of Tony Blair, when asked if Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown could win the next general election for Labour, said: “I think Tony Blair will win the next election for Labour.”
