Estonia backs EU accession
Estonia has massively backed membership of the European Union.
Results from Sunday’s referendum in the ex-Soviet country found two-thirds of voters in the 1.4 million populated country backed accession.
The Central Election Commission said 66.9 per cent of ballots approved of EU membership in the Baltic state.
Those against held 33.1 per cent of the vote.
The turnout was 850,000 voters.
Estonian Prime Minister Juhan Parts said: “Spring has arrived in Estonia – we’re back in Europe,”
And Foreign Minister Kristiina Ojuland said: “This decision will guarantee the future of Estonia,”
Estonia is one of eight east European countries set to join the EU next May.
The EU is set to grow from 15 to 25 member states.
Latvia votes next week.
The Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia have all already voted “yes.”
