US warns of Russian invasion of Ukraine as troops gather at border

The United States government has said Russia may be planning an invasion of Ukraine in a potential repeat of its 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Tens of thousands of Russian troops have amassed on Ukraine’s eastern border.

Labour MP Barry Sheerman has tweeted a quote from an interview on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme earlier today, writing: “Russian intentions in Ukraine are crystal clear NATO must be prepared for this with a clear strategic plan & be ready to act decisively if Russia invades”.

The foreign and defence offices are yet to release a statement.

This comes after Polish prime minister Mteusz Morawiecki and various western leaders accused Belarus’s authoritarian leader, backed by Russian premier Vladimir Putin, of sending migrants to the Polish border due to fury over EU sanctions on the Lukashenko regime.

The Kremlin yesterday alleged that it had attempted to  intercept a British spy plane in the Black Sea to Ukraine’s south.
