Trial of Imran Ahmad Khan MP to begin today

The trial of Imran Ahmad Khan MP, elected in 2019 as the Conservative MP for Wakefield in West Yorkshire is set to begin today at Southwark Crown Court.

Mr Khan, 47, denies a single charge of sexual assault against a 15 year old boy in Staffordshire in January 2008.   Mr Khan pleaded not guilty to the charge last year and is on unconditional bail.

Mr Khan has been suspended from the Conservative Party, and having had the Conservative whip suspended, currently sits as an independent in the House of Commons.

Mr Khan worked in the strategy and communications sectors, including undertaking roles for a number of a governments and the United Nations, before becoming an MP.  He was formerly a Senior consultant for M&C Saatchi.

The trial is expected to last two weeks.
