Levelling up white paper postponed until 2022

The government has confirmed the long-awaited levelling up white paper will not arrive this year.

The prime minister’s spokesperson confirmed earlier today the paper won’t be published until January 2022.

Levelling up is one of the cornerstone’s of the government’s political agenda, despite criticism over whether the idea is more of a slogan than a political strategy for reducing inequality across the UK.

In September, the government rebranded the department of housing, communities and local government to incorporate levelling up into its remit, putting highly-experienced cabinet minister Michael Gove in charge of the levelling up agenda.

Mr Gove has provided hints over the government’s plans to “level up” the country, including the possibility of American-style governors in England, but it will not be until 2022 when the government’s full plans are revealed.
