Bookmakers slash odds on Gary Neville standing for Parliament

Bookmakers have this morning cut the odds on former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports football pundit, Gary Neville, standing for Parliament at the next election.

Mr Neville recently announced he had joined the Labour Party, and last week did a party fundraiser with some 700 people in Manchester alongside Sir Keir Starmer. According to the newspaper City AM, the former footballer is now set to ramp up his work with the Labour party.

Neville is seen as a powerful communicator and media performer.  He was at the centre of opposition last year towards the proposed European football super league.

Paddy Power previously had Neville’s odds as standing for Parliament at 100/1, but these have now reduced to 20/1.  The odds of him actually winning a seat now sit at 25/1.

Gary Neville – Labour MP?

Neville has previously been outspoken on Brexit and has never shied away from political commentary.  In recent months, he has been very vocal in attacking Boris Johnson. On Twitter he once replied to David Cameron saying, “Absolute Joke you are. Started this mess and ran!”

On general election day in 2019, the Sky sports commentator, posted a red rose to his 5 million Twitter followers, alongside the word ‘Labour’.

Describing his political outlook, Neville has previously said, “I do believe that we need a progressive Labour Party, but one that actually not just looks after the Left side; it has to come towards the centre”.

Neville currently appears on Sky Sports Monday Night Football with the former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher.  Carragher  reportedly once donated £10,000 to Andy Burnham’s 2010 Labour Leadership campaign.

There has also been speculation that Gary Neville could replace Andy Burnham in the future as the Mayor of Greater Manchester, something Neville has yet to rule out.

Ardent Neville fans can also take a bet on him becoming becoming Prime Minister one day at 66/1.
