Labour: Young people let down by coalition

Labour’s shadow business secretary Pat McFadden comments on today’s A-level results:

“These A-Level results mark an intense period of competition for higher education places, following another surge in applications this year.

“The coalition talks about social mobility yet one of its first acts was to cut 10,000 student places for the coming year compared to Labour’s plans.

“On top of those cuts government ministers have consistently attacked Labour’s target of greater participation in higher education.

“Far from promoting social mobility, they have chosen to restrict opportunity for young people receiving their A-level results today.

“Capping aspiration is no way to increase opportunity or to promote social mobility.”
