Tory expenses repayments in full

Forty-five Conservative MPs have agreed to make repayments from their expenses claims after the party’s scrutiny panel probed their use (or misuse) of the second homes allowance (SHA).

In total £125,247.67 will be repaid as a result, in addition to £33,166.58 by members of the Shadow Cabinet and an estimated £108,600 by Tories voluntarily agreeing to forego all or part of their SHA.

The new repayments were made after the panel sought to identify which claims, while still within the rules, “could be regarded as disproportionate”.

Party leader David Cameron was downplaying the panel’s thoroughness as he announced its findings, saying: “I am not going to pretend that this has been a perfect process. No doubt the findings of the scrutiny panel will throw up some inconsistencies.

“In some cases it may have been too tough. In others, some may feel it has not been tough enough.

“We had a small team. This was not a forensic accounting examination. The House of Commons examination may pick up issues which we have not.”
