Bookies have installed David Cameron as the favourite to win the third and final election debate.

Paddy Power has offered 6/5 odds for the Conservative leader while Ladbrokes has given a Cameron win 11/8 odds.

The topic in Thursday's BBC ' s debate will be the state of the economy. Many experts believe it that it could be weaker ground for Cameron's rivals.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: "Cameron has got better as the debates have gone on and we would expect the Conservatives to be on their strongest footing when debating the economy given Labour's recent deficit travails."

Indeed both the leaders of the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties have had to endure heavy criticism on the economy.

As the sitting Prime Minister, Gordon Brown has come under sustained pressure as Britain's debts continue to cause concern.

Yet, despite the latest onslaught of criticism which was delivered by the IFS, Ladbrokes anticipates that Brown will come out better than expected on the economy.

As a result, the bookies are offering 2/1, the shortest odds yet for a Brown victory.

The economic policies of Nick Clegg, the self-proclaimed "new kid on the block" have been derided by opponents as being vague and unfounded. However, Clegg's popularity has not suffered greatly in the country's betting shops.

Paddy Power has seen that in the early political betting, Clegg is once again the most backed candidate, having been declared the winner in the first two debates by ICM pollsters. Ladbrokes have echoed this confident expectation by offering 1/4 for a Clegg victory.

According to Paddy Power, the Lib Dem leader is the 13/8 second favourite for a third victory with Gordon Brown the 11/4 outsider.
