Welcome to the new politics.co.uk blogs channel.

We hope you find this another useful addition to the website and will fully explore the various blogs we have featured here.

Political blogging has grown significantly in the last two years. Certain political bloggers are now well known personalities in their own right and it's not hard to see why. Two or three of the biggest political stories of the year have been broken by political bloggers, such as the scandal which ended Damian McBride's career.

What is also clear is that political blogs, no matter what their size, are likely to play a crucial role in the battle between the political parties in the upcoming general election. So we at politics.co.uk decided to venture out into the blogosphere to check out the good, the bad and the downright unreadable.

We don't profess to be the authoritative voice on political blogs. But we thought our readers might find our reviews of the various UK political blogs out there a useful guide. In our reviews we tell you who the blog is by, its political leanings and give each blog a score out of ten. This is not meant to be overly critical, in fact, we aim to be as positive about blogging as possible. But we will, hopefully, help you separate the wheat from the chaff. A copy of the criteria which we have used to assess each blog is available in the Blogs Rules.

We know our list of blogs is not exhaustive. But we have tried to focus on blogs that are political in their nature rather than just general blogs. We found about 750, regularly updated, genuinely political blogs out there. That said, if you are a political blogger and you think we have ignored you we would encourage you to contact us with the details of your blog so that we can include you in our list.

Meanwhile, there is also an opportunity for you to leave your own reviews of each individual blog. So if you think we've got it wrong (or right) about a particular blog then you can tell us as well.

A thoroughly left wing blog, which scores high marks for dragging references from publications we'd never heard of.

A Big Block of Cheese - politics.co.uk

A blog from the back room

Hopi Sen writes a sparkling blog about the political issues of the day.

x

A Conservative's blog

This blog is a great source of entertainment whether you agree with the comments or not.

x

A Janus Face

A political blog that occasionally veers into greener pastures, this unfortunately loses points for the fact that it doesn't update often enough.

x

A Lanson Boy

We were hugely impressed by Cllr Folkes' commitment to local politics.

x

A Right Individual

A right wing blog which maintains too much of an independent spirit to be described as actually Conservative.

x

A Very British Dude

With humour in abundance this is a blog that will put a smile on your face, unless you are a communist or member of the BNP.

x

A Very Public Sociologist

The posts are by no means short but they are filled with well researched information and give a deep insight into socialism.

x

A View From Rural Wales

Glyn Davies is an assembly member from Wales who is sometimes so candid in his blogs you wonder whether he belongs to this vicious, media-savvy age.

x

Aberavon & Neath Liberal Democrats

As a rule, the contributors to this site tend to highlight what's been going on in the news at either a national or local level.

x

Action 4 Equality Scotland

Unsurprisingly, considering the background of the author, this blog focuses on unions and worker-related issues from a variety of sources.

x

Action-without-theory

Not the most regularly updated blog but when it is the blog does express well reasoned opinions and occasionally throws up the odd piece of information you might not find from anywhere else.

x

Adam Macqueen

As one would expect from a private eye writer, this blog is filled with scathing jokes about everybody.

x

Adam Smith Institute Blog

The Adam Smith Institute gives you all the information you need about the newest tax cuts, bailouts and economic policy.

x

Adopted Domain

This is a pretty decent blog for Edinburgh based political stories and opinion. Its also has a nice simple design and a couple of decent little online tools. Just a pity its not updated a little more regularly.

x

Adrian Sanders MP

A blog from a Liberal Democrat MP, who tell us all about the thrills and spills from Westminster.

x

Advice from a fake consultant

What problems does the new administration face from Egypt? Why is America in constant campaign mode? These questions are all answered by our fake consultant.

x

Aileen McLeod

Unfortunately this blog is like that of many MP, MEP candidates who appear to think that setting up a blog is a good idea and a sensible way of harnessing the power of the internet to launch their political careers only to then neglect the blog they themselves set up.

x

Aitken's Edinburgh

A candid view of the going's on in the local council of Edinburgh.

x

Alan Beddow

If you've read the biography of this blogger then you've probably read all you need to.

x

Alan Collins - The Twydall Tory

This is a well-presented, regularly updated blog. While it's not the most exciting read, the blog is well designed and it's clear Alan Collins has a lot of interest in politics, as well as designs on one-day becoming a Conservative politician himself maybe?

x

Alasdair Ross

Alasdair Ross explains the goings on in the world of an Ipswich councillor.

x

Alex Massie's Blog

This interesting and entertaining blog from Scottish journalist Alex Massie covers mainly American topics and provides fascinating and sometimes amusing posts on issues from across the Atlantic.

x

Alfred the Ordinary

Alfred the Ordinary's blog has a clean and clear design, a decent comment function allowing his readers to interact with him and is overall a good read.

x

Always win when you're singing

Always win when you're singing is a great little blog proud of the fact that it was shortlisted for the best new Lib Dem blog - who gave out these awards is slighly less clear though.

x

Ambush Predator

This blog is an engaging read and unapologetic in the way in which it expresses its views.

x

Amused Cynicism

This blog is quite clearly Libertarian in its views and it's difficult to suggest a political persuasion beyond that.

x

An Englishman's Castle

From what we can gather from reading this blog An Englishman's Castle is a Conservative and libertarian blogger. It's a good read, well written and entertaining.

0

Analysing British Politics

A fairly basic blog with very little in the way of interactivity. This is an OK blog but fails to really excite or even raise the temperature of its reader.

x

Anders Hanson

This is generally another blog in the OK category.

x

Andrea Leadsom

While we're not particularly fond of the design of the site - the colours are a little off-putting although we can't exactly decide why - this is a good, clear blog that is regularly updated especially when comapred to many parliamentary candidate blogs.

x

Andreas' Blog

The simple, basic design of this blog might put some off from examining its content.

x

Andrew Allison - A Conservative View

Andrew Allison is a Conservative blogger with a big C, a clear Thatcherite who believes the only way the Tories will win the next election will be by being radical.

x

Andrew Bridgen

The blog side of Andrew's campaign website is well maintained and for a parliamentary candidate reasonably well updated.

x

Andrew Burns' Really Bad Blog

Updated daily, this is a good local blog by a local councillor - recognised as such by becoming a finalist in the New Statesman's New Media Awards in 2007.

x

Andrew Nutt

We know that many politically affiliated blogs like to chose colour schemes that are similar to the party they are affiliated to, but the use of green on this blog is a little off-putting.

x

Andrew Reeves' Running Blog

This particular blog contains Andrew's musings on, well just about anything but there's just enough politics in it to keep us interested - just.

x

Andy D'Agorne

Not a brilliant looking blog nor updated very regularly (when we looked last it had just been updated after being left fallow for a month) but its nice to see a local councillor writing about issues in a local context.

x

Andy Love MP

As many people interested in political blogging will know, MPs that blog are almost as rare as hen's teeth.

x

Angels in Marble

This is a regularly updated, opinionated and well written blog.

x

Anglo Noel Natter

We're not able to tell which political party this blogger is affiliated to but Anglo Noel Natter's left wing credientials are fairly clearly on display.

x

Anglo Saxon Chronicle

Should do better. It's tone is suitably frivalous, given its approach to politics, but The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle still feels somewhat without purpose.

x

Another Green World

Given the description Derek himself gives of his blog we're not sure there's nuch we can add.

x

Anthony McKeown

This is a local councillor's blog and as such it's fine without being the most exciting thing we've ever seen.

x

Anthony Painter

The blog's simple design hides a wealth of content.

x

Antonia Bance

This is a decent blog from a local councillor, which is unafraid to share opinions of both a personal and political nature.

x

Antony Little: Little's Log

Anthony Little is a Conservative local councillor and parliamentary party candidate for the Norwich South constituency.

x

Anything Caron Can Do

Iain Dale doesn't update his blog that often at all - approximately once a month if that - possibly in response to the fact that there is a much more famous Iain Dale floating around the blogsphere - but we're obviously speculating here.

x

Appalling Strangeness

The Appalling Strangeness is an entertaining blog whether you agree with the author's politics or not - the blogger used to be a member of the Conservative party until David Cameron started saying the same sort of thing as Poly Toynbee apparently.

x

Arbitrary Constant

Seemingly left-leaning and libertarian in many of its views its difficult to describe a firm political affliliation for this blog.

x

Archbishop Cranmer

Archbishop Cranmer is ranked the 22nd 'most influential political blog' and the 24th most 'influential blog' in the UK by Wikio.

x

Association of Liberal Democrats

Need to know what campaigns are going on, election results or job opportunities within the Lib Dems? Look no further.

x

Austin Mitchell MP

Outspoken to say the least this is the sort of MP blog that you've been waiting for, particularly if you're old Labour and furious with the party.

x

Ordovicius

An interesting blog on Welsh politics, together with some material on international affairs.
