Crabb, Stephen

Stephen Crabb was first elected as the Conservative MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire in 2005, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 5,062.

The Preseli Pembrokeshire constituency is found in the far Western corner of Wales and contains the towns of Haverford West, Milford Haven, Fishguard, and the small cathedral city of St Davids. Alongside the Preseli Hills, the coastal beaches in this part of Pembrokeshire are popular with summer holiday makers.  The commercial port at Milford Haven is important to the oil industry, and there was a substantial oil spillage here in 1996 when the oil tanker, the Sea Empress, ran aground. This constituency is a tightly fought marginal which Labour held between 1997 and 2005, and where the results have been close in all the elections that have followed.  It is a seat Labour would be expected to win if they were to win the next General Election.

The Preseli Pembrokeshire constituency is set to be heavily redrawn following recommendations by the Boundary Commission, something which in turn may endanger Mr Crabb’s future career at Westminster.

Crabb is Chairman of the House of Commons Welsh Affairs Select Committee.

He previously served as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in 2016, and as Secretary of State for Wales between 2014 and 2016.

Crabb stood unsuccessfully for the Conservative Party leadership himself in 2016.  In the 2019 contest he backed Sajid Javid, with whom he had stood on something of a joint ticket himself back in 2016.

Stephen Crabb was born in 1973 and grew up in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, where he attended Fenton Infants, Barn Street Junior School and Tasker Milward VC School. After a gap year spent working with voluntary projects in USA and Colombia, Stephen studied at Bristol University.

Following a year spent working in the House of Commons as Research Assistant to Andrew Rowe MP, Stephen became Parliamentary Affairs Officer of the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services in 1996. Between 1998 and 2002 he was Policy and Campaigns Manager at London Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Married with two children, he is is a keen long distance runner and has played rugby for Commons & Lords RFC

Crabb is an active Christian who opposed same sex marriage.  He is one of the more leftward leaning Conservative MPs.

Stephen Crabb is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on France.  He is Vice Chair of the Party Parliamentary Groups on Rail in Wales; AEA Technology Pensions; Rugby Union; Holocaust Memorial; Marine Energy; and War Crimes.
